Cooperation with non-governmental organizations and taking into civilian activity played an important part in the programme even in the preparatory years of Pécs2010 European Capital of Culture. A great example for that is the event called Buddha songs, which can be seen in Pécs every day from 1st of January. In the first month of the year we can meet with these special performances in the area of Apolló cinema, from February in Ferencesek, Irgalmasok, Jókai and Király Street, Jókai and Kórház Square and Hungária Street. Pictures appearing in the afternoons and evenings are the collective composition of designers from Pécs.
The project created by Molnár Cingi Béla and Kiss Éva together with Déli Szél Kortárs Alkotói Fórum Foundation appears in randomly chosen shop-windows. The meeting is based on suddenness. First the spectator may hold it to be a commercial, but seeing it more the message will stand out.
The pictures projected on glass work with different cultural symbols. The creators use sacred elements that already lost in the modern world in a new combination with a special message for everyone. Under the stencil graphic Buddha there are the thoughts of the artists, similar to the order and prohibition formula of the Judeo-Christian heritage. In this way the seemingly opposing cultural symbols become the frame of the artists’ message. However they carry a meaning within themselves, the goal is not to contrast or criticise them. In spite of that the spectator may discover commonalities in the original meaning of the two seemingly contradictory cultural symbols.
From February the fans of Buddha songs have the chance to visit the free website. Here the actual programme and the messages from the artists can be followed day-to –day. A photo action belongs to the project too with the participation of volunteers dressed like Buddha.
On the website besides having information about the programme the registration on the mailing list is possible too. Those who couldn’t see the projected pictures and texts personally can get them after registration weekly or by the month.
