The Heritage Festival is the region's oldest festival of the combined arts. It's the kind of festival where you can have a good time whether you live here or have travelled from further away. An opportunity for the city to rewrite its own history, to look upon half-forgotten buildings, lifestyles and discussions as an inheritance, and to begin to reconceptualise those things that are seen as one's heritage, in order to fashion a cultural message which makes the city different from other settlements.

The creation of a route between times and spaces is, if not the only, nevertheless a most important responsibility of culture. Pécs affords the conditions necessary for such a journey through time, which lifts one up from profane times to burst into the sacred sphere, which as some kind of fourth dimension, the strange conglomeration of space and time, allows one to step beyond everyday life. Pécs, as a polydimensional space from its variety of towers to its early Christian mausoleum, from its intimate inner courtyards to the cellar system running below the city proffers a spatial experience which is at once many and makes it possible to rove among different times. Exploiting these conditions, the events in the historic inner city conjure up a bustling life among the monuments. On the stage erected in the immediate vicinity of the world heritage sites concerts, dance and stage productions await their audiences.

Organised as the official event of Pécs2010 – European Capital of Culture project.
