Pécs Cantat

Singing Cultural Capital of Europe

15-22 August 2010
Public squares and concert halls of Pécs, Cathedral of Pécs

The choral music of Pécs is among the best in Europe. Its choirs have won more than 300 prizes at international choral festivals, and several of its conductors have been honoured with the Liszt Prize. Over the eight days of the Pécs Cantat this valuable treasury will be displayed before the country and the world through the mass singing and productions of the some thousand Pécs, Hungarian and foreign participants.

The prestige of the Pécs Cantat can be seen in its being embraced as a European Cantat event, with 6 workshops led by noted Pécs conductors and the vanguard of the international profession. The organisers await around a thousand singers from Europe and other continents at the Pécs Cantat, who together with Pécs choirs can learn the wonderful works of Bartók and Kodály, works by contemporary Hungarian composers and popular choral pieces, which will be performed in choral concerts at various venues of the city.
Each evening there will be the special experience of communal singing, where the citizens of Pécs and tourists can join in with the great international choir and noted music ensembles from the city on the square in front of the cathedral.
